No. 3 Calumet fell behind fellow Division 3 opponent No. 2 Flint Powers Catholic by one goal early in the first period, before rattling off five goals for a 5-1 win Friday in Trenton.
Flint Powers (14-2-2) scored its lone goal following a power play, but Calumet (7-9-2) answered with three goals in the period, securing a comfortable lead.
“I thought we played a solid game today,” coach Dan Giachino said. “We went down 1-0 early but we battled back and built a nice lead. We controlled a lot of the play for the first and second periods. We were able to play more defensive in the third period and preserve our lead.”
The Copper Kings got two goals Sam Erkkila, and one each from Hunter Rowe, Davin Lehto and Tyler Johnson.
In addition to being No. 2 in Division 3, Flint Powers is also ranked No. 7 in the Super 10, making the victory even more meaningful.
“The fact that we can beat a team like this shows where the three teams are in the Copper Country when it comes to Division 3,” Giachino said. “We will have a good chance in regional playoffs.”
Next up, Calumet takes on Warren DeLaSalle today at 8:20 a.m.
“They are a younger team, kind of like us,” Giachino said. “They are a physical team that will come at us hard, but we will look to counter with our speed.”
