If Kurt Corcoran looks like someone who didn’t get enough sleep last night, blame it on his head coaching position.
The Westwood girls basketball coach watched his Patriots build a 20-point lead before Calumet stormed back to pull within four in the fourth quarter.
But WHS hit enough free throws at the end to hold on for a 53-46 victory in the teams’ first-ever meeting.
“It was real disheartening to see our girls play probably their three best quarters of the season, then play our worst at the end,” Corcoran said. “All I can remember from this game is that fourth quarter.”
The Patriots (7-2) steadily built their lead, taking a 14-11 advantage after one quarter and building it to 28-15 at halftime and 44-28 by the end of the third quarter.
“In the third quarter, we came out rip-roaring,” Corcoran said. “By early in the fourth, it almost seemed like it was garbage time.”
But the Copper Kings, winners of the Class C state championship three years ago, learned lessons from their predecessors about continuing to compete.
“Credit Calumet for never giving up,” Corcoran said. “They just scratched and clawed their way back. It was only because we were able to hit some free throws down the stretch that we won by seven.”
Sophomore Tessa Leece led a balanced Westwood scoring attack with 13 points, while senior Liz Farley added 12, senior Aidan Reath 11 and sophomore Madi Koski nine.
Senior teammate Marissa Carello pulled down a team-high nine rebounds while scoring five points.
Lea Bjorn paced the Copper Kings (4-2) with 18 points. Calumet hosts Ontonagon on Tuesday.
Westwood plays at Houghton next Friday.
