The Calumet Copper Kings earned a dramatic 14-6 West-PAC win over the Northland Pines Eagles to start the season Friday in Eagle River.
Brent Loukus’ 35-yard touchdown run with 6 minutes, 48 seconds left in the fourth quarter was the go-ahead score. Loukus added a two-point conversion on a pass to Matt Ojala.
Loukus gave Calumet a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a 9-yard touchdown pass to Ojala.
Northland Pines tied the game in the fourth quarter on a 63-yard touchdown run by Tyler Hunt with 11:22 left in the fourth quarter. The extra point was no good.
Calumet outgunned Northland Pines 272-246. Loukus led Calumet with 86 yards rushing on 11 attempts, while Travis Ojala had 75 yards on 22 carries.
Loukus was 6 of 17 through the air for 72 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Next, Calumet travels to face Negaunee on Thursday.
