After being a dominating inside presence throughout the season, 6-foot-3 Calumet senior Hailey Wickstrom was named the West-PAC Player of the Year by the league’s coaches on Tuesday.
Wickstrom averaged a double-double with 19.3 points per game and 12.1 rebounds per contest. She scored a career-high 35 points in a 57-47 win over the Negaunee Miners on Feb. 7. Wickstrom also broke the 30-point mark when she scored 31 against West Iron County in a 54-34 win on Dec. 8.
Wickstrom was also the West-PAC Player of the Year in volleyball this past fall.
Houghton head coach Julie Filpus was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Houghton Gremlins to a 19-1 season and a perfect 8-0 record in the West-PAC. Filpus’ defense allowed just 38.5 points per game on the season.
It was all seniors on the West-PAC First Team, with L’Anse’s Bailey Froberg, West Iron County’s Emily Kinner, Houghton’s Tawna Ryynanen and Sloane Zenner and Hancock’s Maija Sebbas being named to the conference’s top unit.
Named to the West-PAC Second Team was Calumet junior Niina Anderson, L’Anse junior Taylor Brown, West Iron County freshman Eden Golliher and Houghton senior Cara Monette and Houghton junior Kara Pietila.
Houghton junior Madi Dillinger, Calumet junior Brooke Kariniemi, West Iron County sophomore Colbi Laturi and Hancock freshman Taylor Sebbas were all named West-PAC Honorable Mention.
