Multiple Teams · Calumet Girls 3rd, Boys 8th at Ishpeming CC Meet

Even giving some of his competitors a head start, Colton Yesney of Negaunee and Alyssa Webber of Munising could dominate a high school cross country meet.

The two top runners had to wait at the start along with other schools’ top runners during the Foxes & Hounds Meet held at Wawonowin Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.

Runners left in staggered starts about 20 seconds apart, starting with the No. 7 runner on each team. So the top boys took off two minutes later and top girls three minutes later.

Yesney led his Miners boys to a fairly close victory even as his team swept the top four spots. That was because runner-up Ishpeming, led by fifth-place finisher Grady Kerst, grabbed five of the next six spots.

Negaunee scored 25 points and Ishpeming 38. Houghton didn’t fare badly, either, with 57 by taking seventh with Clayton Sayen along with 11th through 14th.

Munising was seventh with 221 points, Republic-Michigamme eighth with 258, host Westwood ninth with 310, Gwinn 12th with 325 and Baraga 13th with 381.

Yesney finished in 18 minutes, 25 seconds on the 3.1-mile course. Without his delayed start, his actual time was converted to 16:25.

He was followed by teammates Eric Anderson, second in 18:36 (converted time 17:56); Mitchell LaBelle, third in 18:40 (converted 18:20); and Mark Anderson, fourth in 18:41 (converted same time).

Kerst was fifth in 18:43, which converted to 16:43, with teammate Jonah Broberg sixth in 18:44, converted to 18:24.

Even with her wait at the start line, Webber won the girls race by a full minute in 23:01, which converted was 20:01. Runner-up Peyton Johnson finished in 24:01, converted to 22:31.

But led by fourth-place finisher Brooke Johnson, Ishpeming won the girls team title with 75 points. Houghton was runner-up with 94, Calumet third with 102 and Munising right behind with 103.

In addition, Negaunee was seventh with 173 and Baraga 12th with 290.

Johnson finished in 24:08, just seven seconds out of second place and converted to 23:47.

The Mustangs’ Maddy Peramaki was sixth in 24:12, the Miners’ Clara Johnson seventh in 24:17 and Ishpeming’s Mariah Bertucci ninth in 24:37.

Baraga’s top finisher was Sarah Dix, 14th in 25:00.
