Multiple Teams · Kings Finish With Perfect 8-0 Record in WestPAC

The Calumet Copper Kings finished the WestPAC season with a perfect record, beating the West Iron County Wykons 65-37 Thursday in Calumet.

“West Iron County is a very improved team and they didn’t have Erin Angeli,” Calumet head coach Jeff Twardzik said. “We all hope she has good news coming off her injury.”

WIC managed to stay tied with Calumet after the first quarter, 16-16, before the Copper Kings (18-0, 8-0) outscored WIC 14-5 in the second quarter to lead 30-21 at halftime.

“Everyone is bringing their A-game against us, which is good,” Twardzik said. The kids are challenged and getting better. We talk about where we were at, where we’re going and where we need to be. I think we’re getting there.”

Alexa Anderson led Calumet with 17 points while Hailey Wickstrom scored 15 and Leah Kiilunen added 13.

“Alexa Anderson is coming on strong. Leah is our defensive stopper and is now starting to show her offense and Hailey is getting better at controlling the paint,” Twardzik said. “The “team” is starting to win games and that’s what I’m most proud of.”

Up next, Calumet hosts Baraga on Monday. West Iron County (5-13, 1-5) heads to L’Anse on the same day.
