Multiple Teams · Kings Fight Back to Defeat West Iron County

The Calumet Copper Kings overcame a slow first quarter to top West Iron County 57-48 Friday in a WestPac matchup.  West Iron County opened the game with an 18-point first quarter to take an 18-11 lead.

“They took it to us pretty good,” Calumet head coach Mike Ojala said. “Early on, they got us on our heels. We didn’t have the energy or intensity for whatever reason.”

The Copper Kings (10-4, 5-2 WestPac) responded by outscoring West Iron County (2-12, 1-4 WestPac) 28-11 in the middle quarters. Matt Ojala and Wyatt Loukus combined for 13 of Calumet’s 15 second-quarter points.

“Matt and Wyatt both really shot the ball well,” Mike Ojala said. “They really stuck some big shots.”

Matt Ojala hit five 3s and led the team with 21 points, while Loukus scored 16.

“We responded great after a rotten first quarter,” Mike Ojala said.

Up next, Calumet heads to L’Anse on Tuesday.
