Calumet’s girls and Houghton’s boys took team honors at the Calumet Invitational Monday afternoon. But for the second straight week, Class D schools Chassell and Dollar Bay made it interesting at the Swedetown Ski Trails.
“The smaller schools are real competitive this fall,” Calumet coach Arnie Kinnunen said afterward. “But there are strong runners in the conference as well. It makes for some close results.”
Calumet took first place in the girls meet with 45 points. That was 23 points ahead of Chassell and 24 ahead of Dollar Bay. The Houghton boys team brought home honors at the event with 45 points — 20 ahead of Chassell. Gogebic, which had the top placer in Sam Dean, came in third. There was some drama at the finish line of the girls section as Calumet’s Leah Kiilunen virtually had to sprawl across the finish line to place second behind Shitaye Sam of Chassell.
“Leah has been recuperating from a couple of injuries and she just ran out of gas at the finish,” Kinnunen noted. “But she left it all out there, though.”
Sam posted a time of 20:59.92. Houghton’s Anabel Needham nearly caught Kiilunen at the finish line, but finished third.
Abe Gockenbach had the top finish among local runners in the boys event, coming in second. Houghton’s Seth Helman finished third, while Ryan Nelson and Mitchell Delong of Calumet placed fourth and fifth. The Houghton boys also received strong showings from Leif Odegard (8th), Matt Chard (9th), Finn Storer (12th) and Jacob Belmas (13th). Local boys teams will take part in the Jeffers Invite on Thursday, a meet that was rescheduled because of high heat. Most teams will be at the Houghton Invite next Monday.
In the JV meet, Houghton was first. Jackson Connor of HHS had the top time at 20:57.54. The JV girls meet was won by Calumet. Jocelyn Anderson of the Copper Kings had the best time with a 23:46.52 clocking.
