With strong team showings, the Houghton High boys and Calumet girls took first places at the Hancock Cross Country Invitational Thursday afternoon. The 10-school meet was held at McLain State Park on a brisk, but sunny day.
In the boys meet, Houghton came up with a team score of 32 points for top honors, followed by Calumet with 74. Chassell, Dollar Bay, Ironwood, Jeffers, Republic-Michigamme and Hancock were next. Ironwood’s Jared Joki posted a winning time of 16:36, keeping him unbeaten this season.
In the girls meet, Calumet had a team score of 36, with Houghton second with 73 points. Dollar Bay was a strong third with 84 points and Hancock was just a point behind the Bays.
Leah Kiilunen of Calumet took first place with a 21:07 reading. Tori Harris of West Iron County was second with a 21:18 and Marika Abbott of Houghton placed third with a 21:40 clocking. Claire Helminen and Alexa Anderson recorded sixth and seventh places and Annie Tervo was ninth to aid the Copper Kings’ winning effort. The next local action will be the Chassell Invitational Thursday.
